The Nigeria U-17 Women’s National Team, the Flamingos, have enjoyed a strong start to their campaign at the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup in Côte d’Ivoire, recording impressive results in their opening two matches.
Nigeria opened their campaign with a convincing 5-0 victory over Niger, delivering a strong team performance marked by good chemistry, attacking intent and collective determination.
The Flamingos followed that result with another impressive outing against Ghana, securing a 4-2 victory despite being reduced to ten players during the encounter. The result further demonstrated the team’s resilience and ability to adapt under difficult circumstances.
With two wins from two games, the Flamingos now turn their attention to Burkina Faso in their third match of the competition.
The encounter provides another opportunity for Coach Hakeem Busari and his players to test their strength, maintain their consistency and continue building towards the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The WAFU-B tournament remains an important part of Nigeria’s preparations for the World Cup, giving the young players valuable competitive experience while allowing the technical crew to assess the team and work on areas that need improvement.
LEAGUE STANDINGS
Nigeria sit top of the table after Matchday 2 following a 5-0 thrashing of Niger and a 4-2 thriller against Ghana. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Harmony Chidi were both on target in that victory over the Black Maidens.
Burkina Faso bounced back from a heavy 4-0 loss to Ghana on Matchday 1 with a hard-fought 1-0 win over hosts Côte d’Ivoire, courtesy of Ouattara’s 17th-minute strike. They currently have 3 points from 2 games.
The tournament is being played in a round-robin league format and serves as vital preparation for the Flamingos ahead of next month’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, where Nigeria have been drawn against North Korea, Puerto Rico and Poland in Group B.
