The Nigeria U-17 Women’s National Team, the Flamingos, are preparing for the biggest challenge of their campaign as they take on Japan in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Saturday, November 7.

The encounter presents Nigeria with an opportunity to make history by becoming the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, while Japan will be looking to add another title to their impressive record in the competition.
Flamingos’ Road to the Final

Having reached their first-ever final in the tournament’s history, the Flamingos will approach the decisive fixture with confidence following an impressive recovery from their opening-day defeat to Poland.
Nigeria began their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Poland but responded positively with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing a remarkable 3-1 win against defending champions DPR Korea in their final group-stage fixture.

That victory was particularly significant, as Nigeria became the first nation to defeat the defending champions in regulation time at an U-17 Women’s World Cup finals, ending DPR Korea’s remarkable 18-match unbeaten run in the competition.
The Flamingos subsequently defeated Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16 before securing a dramatic 1-0 quarter-final victory over Venezuela through Azeezat Oduntan’s 89th-minute penalty.

Their impressive run continued in the semi-finals, where Nigeria delivered a commanding second-half performance to overcome Brazil 3-1 and secure a historic place in the final.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring before Awawu Bashiru produced an outstanding performance, scoring twice to complete Nigeria’s victory and send the Flamingos into their maiden World Cup final.

The achievement has already surpassed Nigeria’s previous best performance at the competition, which was a third-place finish at the 2022 edition in India.
Japan’s Experience and Road to the Final

Standing between Nigeria and their first-ever world title is a Japanese side with considerable experience and pedigree at this level.
Japan, popularly known as the Little Nadeshiko, are among the most successful teams in the history of the competition. They will be making their fourth appearance in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, having previously reached the title decider in 2010, 2014 and 2016.

They won their only title in 2014 after defeating Spain 2-0 in Costa Rica, while finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2016.
The Japanese side have enjoyed an impressive campaign in Morocco, recording five victories and a draw on their way to the final.

They began their tournament with a strong group-stage performance, winning all three matches without conceding a goal. They subsequently defeated Kenya 3-1 in the Round of 16 before overcoming Ghana 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
Their biggest test came against defending champions DPR Korea in the semi-finals.

After falling behind, Japan found a dramatic late equaliser through a DPR Korea own goal in stoppage time before eventually securing qualification through a penalty shootout.
The result booked Japan’s fourth appearance in the final and their first since 2016.
First-Ever Meeting Between Nigeria and Japan

Interestingly, Nigeria and Japan have never met in the history of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, making Saturday’s encounter their first meeting at the tournament.
Both nations also share an impressive achievement in Morocco, having recorded five consecutive victories following their respective opening group-stage matches. Their winning streaks currently rank among the longest in the competition’s history.

Japan will rely on their technical quality, tournament experience and attacking organisation, while Nigeria will look to their attacking determination, defensive discipline and collective performance to overcome the Japanese challenge.
History Beckons for the Flamingos

For Nigeria, the final presents an opportunity to become the first team to win the U-17 Women’s World Cup after losing its opening fixture. The Flamingos will also be aiming to become the first African country to lift the trophy.
Nigeria’s journey to the final has demonstrated the team’s resilience, particularly following their opening defeat to Poland. Victories against defending champions DPR Korea, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil have underlined their ability to compete against some of the strongest teams in the tournament.

With the opportunity to create a new chapter in Nigerian women’s football, Hakeem Busari’s side will be determined to finish their remarkable campaign on a historic note.
As the countdown to the final continues, the objective is clear: overcome Japan, claim the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy and bring the title home to Nigeria.
