Nigeria U-17 Women’s National Team, the Flamingos, have progressed to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after recovering from an opening-day defeat to record back-to-back victories in Group B.

The Nigerian Flamingos began their campaign with a 2–1 loss to Poland, despite a second-half goal from substitute Oluebube Umuejiaku.

The result left Nigeria needing a positive response in their remaining group-stage fixtures to strengthen their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

The Flamingos responded in their second match with a 2–0 victory over Puerto Rico to register their first three points of the tournament.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring before Precious Oscar added a second in stoppage time to secure the win and move Nigeria back into contention for qualification.

Nigeria then produced one of their most significant performances of the group stage, defeating defending champions Korea DPR 3–1 in their final fixture to confirm their place in the Round of 16.

Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute, while Umuejiaku doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 38th minute.

Defender Rodiat Yusuf added a third with a superb free kick in the 56th minute. Korea DPR later converted a penalty, but the Flamingos held on to seal an impressive victory.

The result was particularly significant against a Korea DPR side that entered the fixture as defending champions.

Nigeria’s disciplined display and clinical finishing helped them secure all three points and finish second in Group B.

The victory secured Nigeria’s place in the Round of 16, marking the Flamingos’ seventh appearance in the knockout stage of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Having finished third in 2022 to record their best-ever performance at the tournament, the Nigerian youngsters will now look to build on their historic 3–1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR as they continue their campaign in Morocco.
