The Nigeria U-17 Women’s National Team, the Flamingos, continued their impressive campaign at the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup in Côte d’Ivoire with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Yamoussoukro.
The result means Nigeria have now recorded three wins from three matches, maintaining their perfect run in the competition while also securing their second clean sheet.
The Flamingos started the game with strong intensity and immediately looked to take control of the encounter. Burkina Faso were forced into an early substitution in the 11th minute as Nigeria continued to push forward and create opportunities.
Mary Dunstan received Nigeria’s first booking in the 12th minute after kicking the ball following the referee’s whistle. Despite the early yellow card, the Flamingos remained focused and continued to search for the breakthrough.
Nigeria created several promising opportunities as the first half progressed. A major chance came in the 32nd minute, but the Flamingos were unable to convert their opportunities into goals.
The first half eventually ended goalless, but Nigeria returned after the break with renewed determination to find a way through the Burkina Faso defence.
In the 60th minute, captain Chidi Harmony was replaced by Oluebube Umuejiaku as Coach Hakeem Busari looked to add fresh energy to the attack. Umuejiaku made an immediate effort to make an impact and came close to scoring but could not convert the opportunity.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 82nd minute. Mary Dunstan produced a moment of quality from distance, firing the ball into the net to give Nigeria a deserved 1-0 lead.
The Flamingos continued to push forward in search of a second goal and were rewarded in added time.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi produced another important moment for Nigeria, taking advantage of the goalkeeper being out of position to finish calmly and double the Flamingos’ advantage.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-0 victory for Nigeria, completing three wins from three fixtures.
The victory also marked the Flamingos’ second clean sheet of the tournament, following their opening 5-0 victory over Niger.
The Flamingos continue to build confidence and gain valuable competitive experience as they prepare for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
