Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has called on Nigerians and the media to remain positive and supportive of the team as they prepare for the crucial FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff fixtures.
Speaking ahead of the next challenge, Ajibade acknowledged the emotions surrounding the team’s painful quarterfinal defeat to Cameroon, noting that the players also felt the disappointment just like the fans.
She explained that, as captain, she has been working to lift the team emotionally and help the players move forward from the setback.
“The loss has already happened and we cannot change it. We just have to come together, put it behind us and focus on what is ahead,” Ajibade said.
The captain described the difficult period as part of the journey for champions, stressing that the team must learn from the experience, improve, and prepare for the challenges ahead.
“We know we have a very good team and a great squad. We can be among the best; we just have to put ourselves together and keep moving forward,” she added.
Ajibade also reassured Nigerians that the team remains hopeful and determined, expressing her belief that the Super Falcons can still achieve their objective through the playoff route.
Addressing the criticism that followed the defeat to Cameroon, the captain revealed that she deliberately stays away from social media to protect her mental well-being.
“Football is never a bad environment; it is the people around it that determine that. When it comes to criticism, I’m always absent from social media, no matter what goes on there,” she explained.
She emphasized the importance of mental health, particularly for players representing the national team, while appealing for criticism to be handled constructively.
According to Ajibade, the players understand the responsibility that comes with wearing the Nigerian badge and are determined to protect the legacy of the Super Falcons.
“We know a lot is at stake, and that is why we give our best to protect the legacy and the nation’s badge, giving everything on that pitch,” she said.
The Super Falcons with the World Cup dream still alive, are now focused on regrouping, improving, and giving their all in the playoffs as they continue their pursuit of qualification.
