Super Falcons Head Coach Justin Madugu has described the team’s upcoming encounter against South Africa as a very important game, insisting that the players are ready to give their best as they continue their fight for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the crucial playoff fixture, Madugu emphasized the importance of having every player physically prepared for the challenge. He revealed that the team’s medical staff are working closely with the players to ensure they are fit and ready to contribute.
“The medical team is working on the players to get them fit for the game. Every player that will be involved will be fully fit, and we are working closely with the medical staff,” he explained.
Madugu also acknowledged the challenges involved in managing a team during a major tournament, noting that every game comes with its own plan and demands. From preparing the players and monitoring their welfare to managing available opportunities and assessing performances, he explained that some decisions can be difficult to predict.
However, the coach maintained that the objective remains the same for every match: victory.
“We go into every game to win. Those who will represent us on the pitch will give their absolute best, while those on the bench will also contribute to ensure that we get it right again,” Madugu stated.
The coach further stressed that the team understands the significance of the playoff and what World Cup qualification means to the players, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the country as a whole.
He admitted that the team remains disappointed by their previous result against Cameroon despite giving their all, but said the players are determined to put smiles back on the faces of Nigerians and their supporters.
Madugu also acknowledged the progress and growing investment in women’s football across other countries, stressing that Nigeria cannot afford to remain isolated.
“The reality is dawning on us. We can now see the improvement and investments other countries are making. Nothing is permanent, and we cannot be in isolation. We have to identify the areas where we need to improve and get things right,” he said.
Addressing the criticism that followed the team’s WAFCON setback, Madugu said criticism is part of football and something the team must learn to live with. However, he appealed for constructive criticism that focuses on football rather than personal attacks.
He noted that many people may not fully understand the sacrifices, efforts, and challenges involved behind the scenes, adding that some reactions have been driven by emotions and sentiments.
According to Madugu, constructive criticism remains valuable, but it should be directed toward improving the team rather than attacking individuals.
With the stakes high and the World Cup dream still alive, Madugu and the Super Falcons are now focused on South Africa, determined to produce a winning performance and take another important step towards securing Nigeria’s place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
