Reigning Nigerian champions will begin their quest for continental glory when they square off against Ghana’s Police Ladies FC today in their opening fixture of the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B’ qualifiers.

Head Coach Whyte Ogbonda, a tactician renowned for his calm but calculated approach, spoke with conviction about his side’s preparedness for the task ahead.

“We know the weight of expectations that comes with representing Nigeria in this competition,” Ogbonda began. “Bayelsa Queens are not new to this stage, and our history in the WAFU B qualifiers speaks for itself. But football is about the present, and we are here with a renewed mindset, fresh energy, and a solid plan to get the job done.”

The coach revealed that his side has gone through an intensive pre-tournament preparation, emphasizing fitness, tactical awareness, and team chemistry. Bayelsa Queens, boosted by the presence of some experienced players, are in peak condition both mentally and physically.

“Our preparations have been thorough. From the moment we sealed qualification in the domestic league, we knew the journey ahead required discipline and hard work. The girls have responded brilliantly in training; they are sharp, focused, and ready for the challenge,” Ogbonda explained.

Facing Police Ladies FC of Ghana is no small task. The Ghanaian outfit, known for their physicality and tactical discipline, will not be pushovers. Yet, Ogbonda is unfazed.

“We respect every opponent we meet on this stage because every team that qualifies here has quality,” he noted.

“Police Ladies are strong, organized, and they play with a lot of heart. We have watched some of their videos but, we also know what we have in our arsenal, experience, speed, creativity, and the hunger to win. Our focus is on executing our game plan with precision.”

Much attention will be on Bayelsa Queens’ attacking force, led by Janet Akekoromowei and last season’s WAFU B top scorer, Emem Essien. Their firepower, coupled with the creativity in midfield and a disciplined backline marshaled by Blessing Illivieda Abiola, gives the Nigerian side a well-rounded balance.

Ogbonda expressed faith in his players’ ability to rise to the occasion:

“This is a team full of leaders and talents. From the forwards to the defenders, everyone understands their role. I believe strongly that they will deliver when it matters most.”

For Bayelsa Queens, the mission is clear: win the WAFU B qualifiers and book a ticket to the main CAF Women’s Champions League. Having previously reached the grand stage of African women’s football, the Nigerian champions are determined to return and make an even bigger statement.

“We are here not just to participate but to compete and to win. Our target is qualification, but beyond that, we want to continue writing history for Bayelsa Queens and Nigerian women’s football. Today’s game is the first step, and we are ready,” Ogbonda concluded.
