Today, January 18th, 2024, we celebrate the birthday of a rising star in Nigerian Women’s football, defender Nicole Payne! Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Nicole’s journey has taken her from American youth leagues to the prestigious pitch of Paris Saint-Germain, with a stop at the heart of American college football along the way.
From Alabama to the Super Falcons:
Nicole’s love for the game began in Birmingham, where she honed her skills before joining the Atlanta-based Concorde Fire. In 2019, she embarked on a new chapter at West Virginia University, leaving her mark on the Mountaineers with 53 appearances and four goals. Balancing academics and athletics, Nicole then transferred to the University of Southern California in 2022, pursuing her studies in psychology while continuing to excel on the field.
Wearing the Green and White:
Nicole’s talent couldn’t be ignored, and she soon found herself representing the United States at the U15, U16, U17, and U18 levels. In 2021, she made the momentous decision to switch allegiances, proudly joining the ranks of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s national women’s team. While still young in her international career, she has already made two impactful appearances, showcasing her defensive prowess and dedication to the team.
A Parisian Adventure Begins:
Last July, Nicole’s dreams came true when she signed a contract with the legendary Paris Saint-Germain Women’s team, joining the ranks of some of the world’s best footballers. This opportunity to play on one of the biggest stages in women’s football marks a significant milestone in her career, and her commitment to the club until 2026 promises many exciting moments to come.
