Nichole Payne’s Return To The NWSL Puts Her On Strong Footing For A Super Falcons Return.

American-Nigerian wing-back Nicole Payne is back in familiar territory, hoping to reignite her international career with the Super Falcons. After a challenging stint in France with Paris Saint-Germain, Payne returned to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) to play for the Portland Thorns.

Having joined Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023, Payne’s time with the Persians proved challenging, with limited appearances in almost a year. Despite earning her first start in January 2024, she found herself sidelined once again, prompting her decision to seek new opportunities.

Prior to her European venture, Payne had established herself in the United States. She excelled at the University of Southern California, before a three-year spell at West Virginia University. Her international debut for Nigeria came in June 2021 against Jamaica, and she was part of the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations squad that finished fourth. However, limited playing time at club level saw her excluded from the Super Falcons for over a year.

Now back in the United States with Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Payne has reignited her passion for the game and rediscovered her form. Her impressive form with the Thorns has earned her a well-deserved recall to the Super Falcons. She’ll be hoping to solidify her place in the squad for the crucial 2024 Olympics final qualifying fixtures against South Africa in April.

A return to the familiar American environment and a starting role with the Thorns have proven to be the perfect platform for Payne to revive her international career. With continued success at club level, she looks set to secure a permanent place amongst the Super Falcons.

In her recent outings with Thorns FC, Payne has showcased her versatility and resilience, making impactful offensive runs while also excelling defensively. Despite a narrow defeat in her competitive debut for the Portland Thorns, Payne’s contribution on the pitch has been commendable, setting the stage for a promising future with both club and country.

With her newfound home in the United States, Payne is poised to thrive and contribute significantly to both Thorns FC and the Super Falcons.
