Family, Football And Legacy: Meet The Payne’s, Toni, Stephen, Nicole, Including Their Parents Leke & Abidemi.

.

In the world of football, talent often flows through families like a precious heirloom, passed from one generation to the next. In the case of the Payne family, it isn’t just talent that unites them, it’s a shared identity, resilience, and an unbreakable bond formed through the beautiful game. From the streets of Nigeria to stadiums in Europe and America, the story of the Paynes is a tapestry of dreams, heritage, and glory.

The Paynes

The Roots: Oyeleke and Abidemi Payne

Before the club contracts, and the international call-ups, there was Oyeleke Payne, affectionately known as Leke and Abidemi, his partner in life. Both born and raised in Nigeria, the pair carried with them a love for sport and a dedication to education when they migrated to the United States. Leke, a gifted footballer in his youth, earned a scholarship to play college soccer at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Abidemi, a natural athlete in her own right, ran track at Alabama A&M University, channeling the speed and determination that would one day manifest in her children.

The Paynes built a life in Birmingham, Alabama, rooted in faith, family, and discipline. Their Nigerian heritage was not something they left behind, but a legacy they carefully cultivated in their home, teaching their children the values of resilience, humility, and cultural pride.

The Payne Siblings

Toni, Stephen, and Nicole were born with talent. That was obvious. With the parents they have, it was impossible for them to not be blessed with outrageous potential. However, we have seen this song and dance before. Athletes with talent and potential, but complacency takes over. Not the Paynes. Abidemi and Oyeleke would never allow that to happen. They instilled a work ethic that has brought the family, the city of Birmingham, and an entire country of Nigeria an overwhelming sense of pride. While their journeys are not yet over, their legacies will last a lifetime.

The Rise of Toni Payne: The Trailblazer.

Born Antionette Oyedupe Payne, but known to the world simply as Toni, the eldest of the Payne siblings was the spark that ignited the family’s football dynasty. From an early age, Toni displayed an uncanny ability with a ball at her feet, sharp, fearless, and instinctively creative. Her parents recognized her potential and encouraged her to chase the sport with zeal.

Toni’s journey took her to Duke University, where she left an indelible mark in collegiate soccer. But it was in 2017 that her professional career took flight when Dutch giants Ajax offered her an internship, an opportunity she seized with characteristic determination. She made her league debut on 19 May 2017 against ADO Den Haag and netted her first goal a year later against PSV.

In July 2018, she signed for Sevilla FC in Spain’s Primera División, where her dynamic style and relentless work rate made her a fan favorite. By 2024, she had earned a coveted move to the Women’s Super League, joining Everton, solidifying her status as one of the brightest stars in African women’s football.

Though eligible for the United States, Toni made the deeply personal decision in 2019 to switch her international allegiance to Nigeria, her parents’ homeland. In 2021, she donned the green and white for the first time against CSKA Moscow at the Turkish Women’s Cup, and from there, became a fixture in the Super Falcons squad, representing Nigeria at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2024 Olympics and Now, she stands poised to make history again at the 2025 WAFCON.

Stephen Payne: The Persistent Dreamer.

If Toni was the spark, Stephen Payne is the flame that kept burning through adversity. The middle child, Stephen’s journey was not as direct, but perhaps even more remarkable for its grit and persistence. Born with natural athletic ability and a sharp footballing mind, Stephen starred at Lake Forest Academy and earned a spot at UCLA Bruins.

But the professional path proved elusive in America, prompting a bold move to Europe. After trials in France and Italy came up empty, Stephen found an opportunity in Portugal’s fourth division. Undeterred by the modest beginnings, he fought his way up to Estoril’s under-23 team and then Varzim’s first team in the LigaPro, where he famously scored a match-winning goal against Porto B.

His resilience carried him to Portimonense in the Primeira Liga, then back home to the US, where he became a stalwart for Richmond Kickers and Forward Madison FC in USL League One. In December 2024, as a seasoned pro and respected leader, he joined Westchester SC ahead of their debut season, bringing veteran presence and a wealth of international experience.

Nicole Payne: The Rising Star

The youngest of the trio, Nicole Oyeyemisi Payne, was never content to stay in the shadows of her older siblings. Born in 2001, she inherited her mother’s speed and her father’s competitive edge. A versatile and composed defender, Nicole’s career took her from the US youth national teams to the heart of Nigeria’s defense.

After a solid college career at the University of Southern California (USC), she took a giant leap in 2023 by signing for French giants Paris Saint-Germain. Nicole quickly adapted to the elite level of Division 1 Féminine, making her debut in a 5-2 victory over Dijon FCO and earning her first start in an emphatic win over Bordeaux.

In February 2024, she secured a loan move to Portland Thorns in the NWSL, where she continued to develop into one of Africa’s most promising defenders. Like Toni, Nicole switched allegiance to Nigeria and made her Super Falcons debut in 2021 against Jamaica. Her growth and consistency earned her a place alongside her sister in Nigeria’s squad for both the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics.

The Payne Legacy

What makes the Payne family extraordinary is not merely their individual successes but the interconnectedness of their journeys. From backyard games in Birmingham to the world’s grandest stages, they have navigated triumph and hardship with grace and grit.

Toni broke barriers and charted a course for her siblings. Stephen carved a path through perseverance and unyielding self-belief. Nicole, the fearless youngest, is writing her own chapter in the family’s story. All three carry the weight and pride of Nigeria on their shoulders and in their hearts, forever tethered to the land of their ancestors.
