The Nigeria U17 Women’s National Team have been drawn against Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, setting up a crucial encounter as both teams battle for a place in the quarter-finals.

The fixture, scheduled for Thursday, October 29, at the Women’s Football Complex in Salé, will see Nigeria face another test following their impressive victory over defending champions Korea DPR in the final round of Group B matches.

The Nigeria Flamingos finished second in Group B with six points, recovering from a 2–1 defeat to Poland in their opening match with a 2–0 win over Puerto Rico before producing a memorable 3–1 victory against Korea DPR.

The result against the defending champions not only secured Nigeria’s qualification but also gave the team renewed confidence heading into the knockout stage. Goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, Oluebube Umejiaku and Kanyinsola Yusuf sealed the victory, while Korea DPR managed a late consolation from the penalty spot.

Mexico secured their Round of 16 ticket after finishing second in Group F, also collecting six points from three matches. They began with a 2–0 loss to Spain but responded with a 3–1 victory over Chile before concluding their group campaign with a 1–0 win against Australia.

The Mexican side will be a familiar name in the latter stages of the competition, having finished third at the 2025 edition in Morocco. They also reached the final in 2018, where they finished as runners-up, underlining their history of competing at a high level in the tournament.

For Nigeria, the encounter will require more than the confidence gained from their victory over Korea DPR. The Flamingos’ technical crew will need to prepare carefully for Mexico’s strengths, while ensuring the players maintain their attacking threat and defensive discipline throughout the contest.

With no second chances in the knockout phase, the winners will advance to the quarter-finals while the losers bow out of the tournament. Nigeria will therefore need to blend the attacking flair displayed against Korea DPR with the composure required to navigate a high-stakes encounter.

Bronze medallists at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India, the Flamingos will be keen to enjoy another memorable run this time around, but overcoming Mexico remains the immediate hurdle in their path to the business end of the tournament.

Now past the group stage, Busari and the team must turn their eye-catching final group performance into another statement result to keep Nigeria’s hopes of World Cup glory alive.
