Nigeria international Gift Monday continued her scintillating form, leading Costa Adeje Tenerife to a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Athletic Bilbao in Liga F on Saturday.
Fresh from scoring for Nigeria in a friendly against Algeria, Monday made an impactful return to her club, where her performance earned her the Player of the Match award. Her goal and assist sealed the comeback win for Tenerife.
Athletic Bilbao initially took the lead through Ane Elexpuru’s stunning left-footed strike from outside the box in the fifth minute. However, Monday leveled the game for Tenerife, connecting with Aleksandra Zaremba’s precise cross and heading it home with authority.
Before halftime, Monday turned provider, assisting Nina Richard’s goal in the 44th minute. Richard’s strike secured the comeback win for Tenerife, leaving Bilbao stunned.
The former Rivers Angels and Robo Queens forward played the entire match, bringing her season tally to four goals and two assists in the league. Her Nigerian compatriot, Rinsola Babajide, remained on the bench as an unused substitute.
With this win, Costa Adeje Tenerife increased their points to 12 from eight matches, solidifying their position in the Liga F standings. They will next face Guiniguada Apolinaria in the Copa de la Reina on November 6, 2024.
