Super Falcons Defender Ashleigh Plumptre says she is sad and disappointed, after being ruled out of the Paris 2024 Olympics due to a foot injury.

Capable of playing as a central defender, forward and as a full-back, Plumptre has been a great addition to Al-Ittihad this season, and she’s found the back of the net six times, including some individual achievements.

Plumptre, got injured in March, missing Nigeria’s final Paris Olympics qualifiers against Banyana Banyana of South Africa.

In her absence, the Super Falcons secured their spot at the Olympics by defeating South Africa 1-0 in Abuja and holding them to a goalless draw in Pretoria.

The former Leicester City player is a third-generation Nigerian, eligible to play for the Falcons through her Lagos-born grandfather.

Plumptre, who had previously represented England at various youth levels, made her debut for Nigeria in 2022 after receiving international clearance and a Nigerian passport. She has since been capped 22 times for the Super Falcons.

Plumptre was also part of the Super Falcons team at the last FIFA Women’s World Cup, where they reached the round of 16.

“Timings haven’t aligned to be in contention for the Olympic roster – a dream I’ve held since I can remember.

Since having my surgery, I’ve worked in every area of my life to be in the best position to recover, but one thing I’ve learnt is how to really listen to my body!

While on a personal note it’s a shame to miss out, I cannot put into words my excitement and pride in knowing I’ll be watching my Super Falcons girls representing this flag on the Olympic stage.
